What is Pet Aquamation?
Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is one of the hardest moments any family can face. As more families seek thoughtful, environmentally conscious aftercare options, aquamation is becoming an increasingly popular choice. But what is pet aquamation—and how does it differ from traditional cremation?
At L.E.A.S.H. Pet & Exotic Animal Mortuary, we believe in providing compassionate options that honor both your pet and the planet. Here’s what you should know about this gentle, water-based process.
What Exactly Is Aquamation?
Aquamation, also known as alkaline hydrolysis or water cremation, is a respectful and natural way to care for your pet’s remains. Instead of fire, aquamation uses a combination of water, gentle alkalis, and low heat to return the body to its natural elements.
The process mimics the natural decomposition that occurs when a body is laid to rest in the earth—but accelerates it in a controlled, sterile environment. The result is a safe, sterile, and environmentally friendly alternative to flame-based cremation.
How Does It Work?
The aquamation process involves placing your pet’s body into a special stainless steel chamber filled with a warm solution of 95% water and 5% alkali (typically a blend of sodium and potassium hydroxide). Over several hours, the solution gently breaks down organic materials, leaving behind pure bone ash and a sterile, nutrient-rich liquid.
The bone ash is then dried and returned to you, much like traditional cremated remains. The aquamation ashes are actually lighter in color and greater in volume than those produced by flame cremation due to the gentle nature of the process.
Why Families Choose Aquamation
1. Environmentally Conscious
Traditional cremation releases carbon dioxide and other emissions into the atmosphere. Aquamation, by contrast, uses 90% less energy and produces zero air pollution. It’s a responsible choice for families who care about sustainability.
2. Gentle and Respectful
Many pet parents appreciate how aquamation avoids the harshness of fire. The process is calm, clean, and mirrors the body's natural return to the earth.
3. More Ashes Returned
Because aquamation preserves more of the bone structure, families often receive 20–30% more ashes compared to flame cremation.
4. Ideal for All Animals
At L.E.A.S.H., we offer aquamation not just for dogs and cats, but also for exotic pets, reptiles, birds, and other nontraditional animal companions.
Is Aquamation Safe?
Absolutely. The aquamation process has been used for years in medical and veterinary settings and is regulated for safety. The resulting ashes are sterile and can be scattered, kept in an urn, or used in memorial keepsakes, just like those from flame cremation.
